Whenever I travel, there’s an internal negotiation, between my lofty imagined self and my shoulder, which carries the bag, deciding which art supplies and camera I ought to bring. Ninety percent of the time, I carry the goods and never pull out a pencil, or put brush onto paper for an entire trip. I do believe that the one time I don’t bring anything, I’ll totally regret it and never forgive myself.
I think I have finally come up with a solution, which includes a very petite pastel palette, W&N watercolor pan set, sketchbook, Pentel water book, mini brushes, pencil, sharpener, eraser, and newly discovered and handy water-brushes. I can add precut sanded pastel paper, which along with precut glassine sheets and a foam core support board, will slide neatly into a stiff, felt, zippered envelope. How minimalist can I pack, lightweight and portable, without sacrificing functionality? Here’s a photo of what I currently think will be awesome, and all under 3 lbs.
I might add a few softer pastels to my petite palette of NuPastels, but these are sturdier and more likely to survive the bouncing along on trails. How do you pack and what do you bring to your studio away from home?
