Water Weilding
After two classes in watercolor techniques, with teacher and artist Susan Cowan, here is a recent project start: underpainting done with a pouring technique which will later be combined with the above photograph – this week’s challenge is to use something with an architectural component.
The underpainting was made using thinned pigments – azo yellow, brown madder, and Prussian blue, which were then loosely dripped from a brush onto a vertically-held 140 lb., cold pressed watercolor paper. The results were not as intense in saturation as I expected, but provided lots of interest for creativity. Some of the drips were also sprayed with water to get more effects. The photo I selected to use in the challenge project was taken in 2014, while walking the Nakasendo Trail, which is an ancient royal roadway between Kyoto and Tokyo.
